News Paper Article

Throughout the novel there was a theme of power which had been demonstrated by the

Martians and mankind. In the novel, there was mankind's lack of power as the Martians had

taken over to be the superior between the two of them. An example of this power struggle of

mankind was when the Martians had first arrived on to Earth and had used powerful technology

like the Heat-Ray to overpower humans. The humans tried to fight back but were of no effect

against the Martians. This theme overall relates to society today as many countries strive for

power. Across the world this a big problem as there are many groups such as ISIS or countries

such as North Korea that abuse their power to harm innocent lives and want to become the

dominant force. Yet governments of the United States of America and Canada do not abuse

power in a bad way. These countries use power to support other countries and to make the

world an equal nation that can coexist peacefully, but the problem has only been minimized by

a little over the past century. This is so because in the past the world had problems with power

which had lead to wars such as World War I and World War II where many nations battle to

be victorious over one another. These wars were caused as one nation or leader had desired

for power and  wanted the world. There are still power issues within our countries such as

discrimination. This problem has a relation to power as in recent news police abuse their power

to harm African-Americans based on their skin colour. This problem has been minimized over

the past years with strong, influential characters that had made a difference, but has not been

completely eliminated. Cases such as Michael Brown where a white cop had shot Michael Brown

as he had opposed no threat towards the cop and later in court the cop was let free. This was

an act of abuse of power similar how the Martians oppressed the humans with their power.
